Question:

Why does my Craftsman Garage Door Opener make a clicking sound when I try to open it?

My garage door opener, (Craftsman 1/2 hp. several years old) would not work, out of the blue. When I pushed the button on the wall unit, the opener just made a single, clicking type noise. It would do it each time I pushed the button. The green light on the wall unit is solid green, the opener itself has a green light that would sometimes flash. I have held in the green button on the ceiling unit which makes the light solid, and even unplugged the unit then plugged it back in. I've tried locking and unlocking the unit but that didn't change anything.

Any idea what I can do to make it work? I don't think the motor is done for, it worked fine the day before. Power is getting to the opener, since the green lighths are on.

  1. if your opener has safety eyes at the bottom of the track you should check and see if they are lit and if not that they have plastic gears inside that may have become worn

  2. Disconnect the door from the operator, then open it manually.

The door by itself, should open about three feet from the ground, and then stay there.

If it does not, the door is not properly sprung.

Next push the operator button and see if the car moves on the track...

Those would be the first two logical steps.

  3. Does the door move at all when you it the button? If not it sounds like the gear kit is bad. It is a relatively easy fix for a professional, I do not recommend doing it yourself, it is really difficult the first few times.

Before calling a professional though make sure the door runs manually.

Chamberlain which makes craftsmen and lift master has used the same gear kit in almost all of its models in the last 20 years and it wears out it is a very common problem in these openers especially after years of  use.

  4. Hmmm,it almost sounds like it went back into a re-program mode.Try referring back to your owners manual to reset the unit and the re-program the remote/s. Has the door become misaligned and jammed in the track?
