Why does my DVD player pause in the middle of a movie and...?

and read cannot read disc even though I cleaned the DVD well before I inserted the disk?

Is it an older player?  Many older players have problems when they have to change between layers in the middle of a movie.  Or it could be a scratch on the disc.  In either case, skipping over that chapter that causes the problem should help even though you end up missing a few minutes of the movie.
