Why does my Gateway laptop w/Vista keeps dropping my HP printer software?

In the last few months my laptop drops or deletes my software downlaod for my HP printer-EVERY DAY! I download again and then it's gone in the next day or two. I specifically download the Vista version, no disk for vista came with the printer. Every day I deal with this, it;s SO frustrating. I know I must be doing something wrong or I'm just a big dummy, but I need it to stick (like it used to, for over a year). HELP........

  1. are you using any kind of software that will remove installed programs after each restart? what about the drivers, are they getting uninstalled too?? do the program just vanish like that as if there was no printer at all?

maybe you need a clean install of vista.... anyway HP's drivers are the worst ive seen. ive swithed from HP to Brother and the drivers and the printer itself are more than great.

    goodluck.

  2. Welcome to Vista...  HP printers have trouble working on Vista in the real world.  Because you did not get a Vista disk with your printer, I am left to guess your printer came out before Vista's release.  If you "downgraded" to Vista then you still have XP drivers installed.  You need to remove all the hp software for you printer and delete the hp printer.  Only then after all the HP printer software is gone can you install the Vista Drivers (if any).
