Question:

Why does my HDTV go to standby when turned on and no picture?

It's an 8 year old Pioneer 64" CRT Projection HDTV. It does not have a picture or lit screen that's blank. You can hear it power up when turned on and the power switch lights up (red light) then it stays in standby mode. Any switch, transformer, cooling fan or circuit board problems? The Model # SD-643HD5. Thanks

  1. Some of the old Pioneers have been exhibiting problems due to bad solder joints on the power supply board. After years of heat-cool cycles, these joints have cracked. The solution has been to remove the board and re-solder everything. I believe this has primarily shown up with the Elites of that era, but it's possible your 643 has the same issue.

If you're comfortable opening the TV, there are red LEDs on some of the boards which only illuminate when there's a problem. This helps quickly locate the issue.

There's a very long thread on this topic at the AVS forum.
