This is a 52" 1080 LCD. I'm running it through regular cable and do not have HD connections yet. Will adding HD make a big difference?

  1. Unless you get HD, it's not going to look all that good. For the 360, have you tried changing the setting from SD to HD? That should make a huge difference. Don't forgot to also change it on the 360's end of the video cable. You need to change the switch from TV to HD.

For TV, you need to call your cable company and request a HD cable box so that you can watch TV in HD. You should see a huge difference. What you're watching now is 480p at best. You want 1080i.

  2. Yes it will, in fact a huge difference. Currently you have a analog signal going into your TV... when you go to digital it is currently the highest quality signal available (Next to ATSC).

If you also live in an area where digital signal is available over the air (eg your old local stations 3,4,5,6,7,8 etc) You can also hook up a digital antenna to your TV and get local channels in Digital for free. This is even better quality then digital cable as the cable company compress the signal when it comes to you. I currently use regular cable at my apartment, and then switch to the digital antenna when I want a local station in true HD.

If you go to antennaweb.org you can check the availability of local tv stations and their digital signal strength.

  3. Christian answered well---but omitted one thing.  Most cable systems (most---) carry the local digital channels in a fashion so that when you auto program your cable (no box--cable directly to the tv) it will/might pick up the local HD channels so that when you change channels you'll see something like 12.1.  This would be your local channel 12's digital signal.

  4. SD looks like c**p on a HDTV. Your second problem is that you are watching a Phillips.
