Why does my TV turn off after it has been on for about five minutes?

I have a Magnavox combo tv (dvd and VCR) that turns itself after beign on for five minutes. At night I noticed that I am able to watch a dvd movie before turning itself off.

  1. did you check to see if you accidently have a sleep timer set on it?
