Question:

Why does my WiFi display, showing available networks, keep showing "FBI Secure Network" in the area?

I have a USB Belkin WiFi device to connect to a downstairs router broadcasting a signal. There's nothing wrong with my network or connection.

However, the USB Belkin has its own software application that I use to montior the connection. In this application, it shows all the available and broadcasted signals in my area. There's roughly around 10 of them. Oddly enough, there's one called "FBI Secure Network" which uses channel 1 instead of 6 or 11 that all the others utilize. The signal is secure and requires a password it seems too than again most signals do if people have a clue to how wi-fi works.

Is this the actual federal FBI or something else that shares the same name? Just seems odd that it keeps showing up. It started showing up about 2 weeks ago.

  1. Anybody can change the name of their wi-fi network. But then again it is possible that the FBI is around your area. You better watch out. But since it's been there for 2 weeks, then it could probably be some goof trying to get other people's attention who use wi-fi.

  2. There may be an FBI facility close to where you are or someone named their connection "FBI Secure Network"

    that's it...  Its no Biggie.

  3. When setting up a WiFi network, the administrator can name it anything he wants.  It may or may not have any association with "The FBI"  If I lived in a neighborhood that was in need of a neighborhood watch, I might call my wireless network  name  FBI, DEA, SWAT, etc just address the paranoia of the criminal mind.  Wifi is only about 100 meters indoors, 400 meters max out doors.  If you have a lap top, 30 minutes of  crusing the neighborhood would narrow down your suspects.
