Question:

Why does my air compressor release pressure?

I've got a CH 4 gallon, It cycles through, filling up just fine(no leaks), the second it's full the air is released and it begins to refill again. Obviously there is a bad part, but I'm not sure what part goes bad. Any help is appreciated, I hate lugging my 12 gallon upstairs.

  1. because it cant hold the preasure forever so it will eventually just leak until its decompressed and if you still have it on it will want to fill up again and then just keep cycling like that mine does that

  2. Bad popoff valve, or the cutout pressure is set too high.

  3. You probably have either a faulty overpressure valve or a faulty pressure regulator.  A bad pressure release valve will let out just a bit of air before it should, and then the compressor will kick in to refill it, and the cycle will repeat.  A bad pressure regulator, on the other hand, will fill the tank above rated pressure (fail to shut off when it should), and then the release valve will let some out.  But in this case, the compressor will probably never shut off, as it continues to try to overpressure the unit.  So I guess I'd say if the compressor never stops, look at the pressure regulator.  If the compressor stops and the starts again right away, look at the release valve.  Of course, given the right circumstances, the compressor could run continuously in either case.  So it's going to be hard to determine conclusively which problem you're having.  I might replace the over pressure valve and see what happens...that would be the cheap/disposable fix to try first.

  4. maybe try going to the place where you bought it and asking them to look at it!hope this helps =)

  5. it's leaking from somewhere...

  6. something sounds wrong with the cutout. its supposed to cut the compressor  when tank is full.  otherwise if it keeps filling the tank is going to release air.

  7. It is supposed to do this. (should be explained in hand book that came with it)

It is the release of high pressure left on the compressor. Without this release the compressor would not be able to start until all the air pressure was depleted from your tank. This removes the head pressure.
