Question:

Why does my back hurt worst when it rains?

I have a couple slipped discs, and when it rains it just about puts me off my feet. I know it has something to do with barometric pressure, but what causes the increase in pain?

  1. arthritis will make it does this when it rains...my dads does it too

  2. I've had slipped discs too, and I believe your pain is due to cold weather. It aggravates the already sensitive nerves. Strange, I know, because usually when you ice down a painful area it soothes it. But in this case it causes irritation, especially to joints like knees.

  3. When it rains, it means the pressure outside is low and thus the internal pressure of the fluids between the discs increase. For people who's joints/back are not so good, the membrane holding the fluid becomes hardened.

Normally, the tissue membrane has a high tolerance due to its elasticity. Scarred tissue, in contrast, is very stiff and dense, and does not expand or contract appreciably within the range of normal atmospheric fluctuation.

When the pressure gets too high, the membrane distorts and stretches, stimulating the nerves and causing back pain and joint aches.

  4. Stormy weather is associated with low barometric pressure.  Whenever the pressure drops, any inflamed tissues will swell more, putting pressure on those nerves.  Load up on anti inflammatories!

  5. I have 4 herniated disks and am trying to avoid spinal fusion. I agree with you that right before it rains and when it's raining I hurt extra bad. I believe that your right it does have something to do with barometric pressure and our nerves being more sensitive because of it. Heat always seems to help soothe the pain for me most of the time. Try laying down with a heating pad the next time you ache.

I know what your going through...one more thing. My doctor did find some arthritis in my back along with my other problems. You may have this issue as well. Arthritis problems are known to become worse in wet weather.
