Why does my best friend do this?!?

I understand how to keep in touch believe me, but my best friend (lives out of state) is always texting me what he's doing if he's hanging out with a guy or something and I don't get it.

For example tonight he was like "I'm hanging out with Chad and he's on the phone and making it obvious he's an ex. 2 can play that game." and the next text he sent me was "Nevermind, false alarm. I'm getting wasted tonight."

I don't text him "Hey I'm hanging out with Jessica right now." or "Hey I'm about to go into Target." What's the point of his messages?

He's trying to impress his friend or just kill time. You know, one person gets out a cell phone and HAS to text someone, so not to look any less popular, the other person HAS to text someone too. You are a safe text, because you are far away and don't know his friend. You are also someone he thinks might like to hear from him and he wants to keep in touch with. Next time you talk to him, say " hey, what's the deal with all the random texts? u just bored or what?" Likelihood is that he is in an awkward situation and is just entertaining himself. If he was your best friend and this is his worst hang up, I would say you are pretty lucky.

I would send him a nice journal as a gift and encourage him to use it, frequently and enthusiastically.

He is just a little bit immature.. if he has such trivial matters to discuss.. I would excuse myself after a while if he is on the phone.. if he sends such a message by email.. I would ignore it.. he doesn't need help.. he is only making statements..they require no answer.. if he had a question or was in trouble, then as a friend of course I would reply.. and try to think of ways to help.. but he is bored I guess I would leave it alone until he has more important news to tell you
