Why does my camaro turn off when i shift from park to reverse?

whenever i turn on my car and hold the brake to shift into reverse the car stalls, and when im at a light the car stalls also, can someone help me?

  1. check the ground wiring from body to battery and to engine.


  2. Check for intake vacuum leaks. Also verify proper idle speed.

  3. if its a older camaro, turn up the idle.

  4. BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU DO... BUT IF YOUR EXPERIENCED JUST:

    If 1994 or newer check relay box for ignition module safety relay... its #2?

    Idle in park specs are 750-850 if its TPI then dont s***w with it, its the computer, if its carbureted than check ur rpm's if lower than 500 at idle when shifting into reverse or any other gear other than neutral it will most likely die. On a standard fourbarrel carb, the throttle body linkage is on the driver side with a kick down cable next to it.

    Lastly, check ur shifter and make sure the shift locking mechanism isnt locked and that you push the brake when shifting...
