  1. you didn't say what kind of car you have but I have 2 good possibles.

The fuel injctors are sealed into the engine with little rubber 'O'' rings. If they are dried out  they shrink and leak gasoline fumes. Or if the cars injectors were removed for some repair and the rings were not replaced with new ones you get the same result. So have the ''O'' rings replaced.

Its not a big job,,,rather very easy.

If the fuel regulator is leaking a little bit thru its rubber vacuum hose you

    get that smell also.

    Good luck

  2. Have it checked by another mechanic. I'm interpreting that the oil-change person looked for a "liquid" leak and didn't find one. But you shouldn't be smelling gas inside the car (assume this is where the fumes are.) It could be a loose or minor leak in a fuel line or maybe a faulty fuel filter.

Had a similar situation with one of my cars - for months, I kept taking it back to where I had a tune-up and fuel injector service done (a Nation-wide tire & service company that will remain nameless...) - Frustrated, I ended up taking the car to the dealer - explained the scenario... the dealer's mechanics did a trace check and found out that the other place had crossed some of the fuel/air flow hoses. The dealer reconnected the flow to specs and ... no more gas smell!

minor problem but a big head-ache. Figuratively and literally (as you know, driving high on fumes is not fun.)

Good luck.  Be careful with lighters, sparks, etc... If you can smell gas - fumes are near & can easily ignite.

  3. uhh, I don';t care what the oil change guy told you, but, you have a fuel leak! You didn't say the car or age of the car, but, I'd look for a seeping fuel line. if it's hot where you live the fuel leak may dry up by the time you crawl under and look (fuel evaporates). look under the car while it's running.

  4. If you're smelling gas that strong then you've got a leak somewhere. There's no other explanation. I suggest you try a different "Mechanic", one who repairs cars for a living, not an "oil changer".

  5. 1. probably not efficient combustion, gas smelled probably comes from the exhaust.

    2. you should also check the fuel pump cover under the rear seat. probably it has started to give way.

  6. Whatever you do, don't light a cigarette in that car!

If the smell is that strong, it's dangerous.

That "mechanic" ought to be shot for letting you drive out of there

    in that condition.

Check the vent and filler lines for 'rust through'.

Please take it to someone who knows his business before you

    become a 'crispy critter'.

When you drive to the shop, do so with the windows open.

( I used to design 'explosion proof' electrical systems.

    Your auto's electric system isn't.)

  7.   If its that strong you have a leak. There are several places that its likely to be. Get it to a mechanic not an oil changer. If its coming out on the exhaust it could cause a fire.
