Why does my car stop when I am at a red light?

The car cuts off and I don't believe it's idling correctly. I have to put it in neutral when I stop or slow down. What do you think the problem is? My check engine light is showing. I have a Ford Focus. Please help.

my car did this although it was a VW jetta.

i found myself having to press the break + the gas to keep it from stutting off, i took it to the garage and they said it wasn't worth spending the money on it, so i bought a new car.
