Question:

Why does my car vibrate/shake when it idles?

I recently have been fixing problems (broken exhaust, dead battery) on my 2000 Honda Civic. I am the furthest thing from a mechanic so it's possible the intermediate pipe wasn't tightened up as much as it should. It seems to be shaking a little bit too. Usually when I drive up a hill to a stop sign, the car shakes significantly while stopped. The engine seems to be shaking a little with the car idled in the driveway. Is it possible to take the car to Midas or somewhere to have them visually inspect the tailpipe or offer any other advice? Any advice is much appreciated.

  1. is it a stick shift? cause all of them do that.

  2. Not enough information on this one. Is the check engine light on. If it;s on does it blink. Engine may be idling to low. Check ignition wires spark plugs. If good check fuel filter. The main thing is the check engine light though. Good luck

  3. You may need a tuneup.  New spark plugs and plug wires might be the place to start.  The shaking is because you have a misfire in one of the cylinders.

  4. Go to Auto Zone and use their computer for free.  It plugs into a socket under the dash that is easy to get to, its left of the steering wheel.

Write down the code it gives you and tell the salesperson.  They will look it up on their computer and tell you what is wrong.

Could be bad plug or spark plug wires.  You can see bad wires sometimes by looking at them when its dark, if you see sparks anywhere your wires are bad.  Make sure the wires are on the plugs all the way.

  5. take it to a shop normally they'll look at the car for free and quote you with how much it is to fix
