Question:

Why does my cat love to chew plastic bags?

I have one cat who loves to chew plastic bags. It's so much that I have to shut the door to rooms that have a plastic garbage bag in a trash can. Sometimes he sits outside the door to those rooms and if I open the door, he's running in there straight to the bag. When I call to him, he doesn't even seem to hear me; he's oblivious to anything but the bag chewing. It almost seems to comfort him. I've never had another cat who does this to this extent. I have to keep all things plastic away from him. What could be the reason for this?

  1. I think the majority of cats like to chew on plastic bags.  It must seem like the skin of some small dead animal to them.

    That's kind of extreme though.

Maybe you could use one of those scents that cats hate on the garbage areas.  I hear that they don't like vinegar, but you might want to look into something that definitely works.

Different cats have different characteristics.  I've got one cat who's super affectionate and like to nibble on ear lobes.  I guess she didn't get enough milk when she was a kitten.

  2. Take  all  the  bags  away  so  it  can`t  chew  on  them.

  3. I don't know, but my cats do the same thing.

  4. it could be the noise the bags make

  5. She might just like it. Try giving her some cat grass and keeping plastic bags in a place where she can't reach them (behind closed doors, in boxes, in childproofed cupboards). lots of cats like to play with the plastic because its crinkly and makes noise, but if they swallow some it can be a big problem. The best things I can think of is just to keep them out of reach, discipline your cat when she chews, and find other toys and cat grasses to distract her. Keep a squirt bottle on hand and near plastic bags so you can spritz her when she starts to chew it - its harmless but discouraging.
