Why does my cat make bizarre noises?

...when stalking something it can't get to? It's like a mumbled clicking noise.

its like a " soon the world will be mine kind of click" its probably frustration

I know exactly what your talking about.

My cat does it ALL the time.

When they see something like a bird. They like "stalk" it open there mouth and make this clicky squeek sound. It's when they see something that looks fun to chase or eat.

It's a form of cussing for the cat. The cat sees somthing it wants very badly but knows it can't reach it so that's a way of expressing its frustration.

Sorry, I don't know why....I had to say that my cat does it too!!! It is like a chattering whiney chirp. I can't possibly see how this could be helpful in a real hunt! Through the window though, I can almost imagine the hysterical laughter of the birds and squirrels.

I can only imagine that it is pure frustration and longing.
