  1. I think that your cat might be growling. Is it kind of a low rumbling noise that gets louder and sometimes ends with a meow or a hiss? One of my older kitties does this when I pet her for to long or when my other cat is around us at the same time. Cats are strange aren't they? My older cat also makes a strange noise (kind of like a mix between a meow and that noise they make at birds and squirrels outside the window) when I first start to pet her after not doing so for a while. I ******* LOVE cats!!

  2. Is it an actual gargle sound..or a "chattering"?  If the former, both of my cats gargle at me if I talk to them directly after they've eaten (kinda like a kid talking with their mouth full..or if you try to talk when your food isn't 100% swallowed yet.)

If the latter, the chattering is a hunting tactic.  I don't know why, but supposedly its to lure the prey animal to within pouncing distance.

  3. Cats make this sound when they can see something they want but they know they can't get to it. It's a way of expressing their frustration. Some cats will do for other reasons besides frustration. I once had a cat that would do it everytime someone sneezed.
