i have a black and white tuxedo cat named bruce. he is forever talking to us. not sometimes, all the time. all hours of the day and night. he gets regular vet check-ups and nothing seems to be wrong, medically. we have 3 other cats, none of which "talk" that much. any suggestions of why? or have you had a cat like bruce?

  1. My cat talks when he wants something, and it's usually very obvious what he wants to say or ask for (pet/cuddle, toy, "you were gone too long," "follow me," "I wish that bug would fly lower to the ground so I can catch it").  But it's also very clear that he just likes to hear himself too, just like some humans.  He makes his rounds through the house in the evenings, yowling into all the corners.  If I didn't know better (actually, I DON'T know better...), I'd say he was inspecting his turf and calling out:  "Nine o'clock and all's well!"

  2. Just like people, different personalities. Some are quiet, some talk sometimes and some have diarrhea of the mouth.  I have two cats.  One is quiet and only talks when she wants something and the other one talks a lot and will get louder if I don't keep my side of the conversation going.  She meets me at the door when I come home from work and talks until dinner.  After she eats she talks some more.  And later, she sits in the hall and sings until we go to bed.  But once we are all tucked in and ready for sleep she shuts up until 5:30 AM.  Don't worry there's nothing wrong with your cat, he's just a chatterbox.

  3. I have a cat like that. She talks constantly, but not at night. And I've read up on it and it's usually when she wants attention, which is obviously all the time. So try to give him alot of attention during the day and deff reinforce none at night.

  4. I never heard a cat talk before but maybe its just "needy"

  5. i have a cat like this... but she pesters me in wee hours of the morning and wakes me up. Usually they want an excess of attention or are very dominate... as far as solutions... maybe a squirt bottle?

  6. A few things to take into consideration:-

    * Make sure the cat has food, water, and a clean litter box. Your kitty could simply be communicating that she wants something to be done about one of those things.

        * Figure out when your cat is not meowing. Is it a certain time of day or during a certain activity? If you pay attention to kitty, does she continue to meow? When does she start again? Then, try to find a way to continue whatever activity stops the meowing (for example, if kitty consistently meows after you stop playtime, get some games for her to amuse herself with after you go to bed)

    .

        * Consider a trip to the vet. When cats are vocal, they are usually trying to communicate something to us... check with your vet to make sure your pet is healthy. There are certain times when cats are noisier, like when they are in heat or pregnant.

Many times kitties meow for attention... and many times they meow exactly when we wouldn't (or couldn't) pay attention to them. I agree with the general consensus to ignore pets when they behave in attention-seeking ways. However, the big problem with this is often the pets don't stop immediately. That can be very frustrating... and makes it hard not to pay attention. Which just continues the cycle!

You need to try to break the cycle. If pets get a response from you by doing something (meowing, barking, etc.), they are just repeating that action to get a response again. The first rule of thumb is do not respond directly to the cat’s meowing even to get up, shush, or yell – any response counts as one, even if it isn't a positive one. If your pet continues to meow, try a time out. Shut the door to the room you are in, when she stops meowing, she can come play. If she meows again, back out she goes. More than anything else, this will take time and patience. Good luck!

  7. Try to spend more time with your cat.

  8. well i have a cat and he meows A LOT but he meows when i talk to him, like he trying to talk to me, but if your not talking to him and he is still meowing then he might be sad about something.
