Question:

Why does my cat poo next to her litter tray instead of in it?

She'll urinate in her tray, and sometimes poo in it, but other times she will just poo next to it instead of inside it. She's even pooped on the floor of our toilet (which is not far from her litter tray in the laundry). Sometimes I think she's confused because she'll scratch at the floor to try and cover her poo, but she doesn't seem to realise that tiles don't move and won't cover anything.

She's an indoors cat who will go outside now and then for short periods of time, but much prefers to stay inside.

I suppose I'm lucky she does her dirty business in her litter tray area and not on the lounge room carpet.

But any ideas why she would do this?

(I wish I could train her to poo in the actual toilet!)

  3. Hi,

I had the same problem before. The following steps helped solve the problem for me.

    1) Get a 2nd tray.

    2) Clean the tray regularly

    3) Clean the spot(s) where she does her #2 with enzyme based cleaners.

    4) Bury a small piece of the poo in the both trays and leave them there for half a day.

This indicates to her where the poo should be. Worked for me. Hope it does so for u.
