this isnt much of a problem but more just me being curious. I've had my cat since feb 2008 and shes about a year and some months old now.. When I go away on trips which is maybe once or twice a year and for about 3-4 days, my cat doesnt eat as much and is always hanging around windows and stuff according to my family. I was wondering if anyone knew why my cat does that. Because when I get back from the trip, she literally feels lighter to me and I get so mad at my family for not taking care of her. but also according to them, they have to put her food in different places each time to get her to eat and shes always grumpy and biting everyone when Im gone. Ive also noticed that even when Im here, I have to be the one to feed her. When anyone else makes her food, she doesnt eat as much as she does when i set it out for her. Any ideas as to why? And could this be a big issue later on if i have to travel more often etc?

  1. Because YOU are not around.

Many cats bond so closely to their person that they get really upset when you're away longer than usual. Some won't eat at all.

My daughter's cat doesn't like be left alone for the weekend but usually she's fine if my daughter tells her when she'll be back.

Recently daughter's flight was cancelled, she was home a day late, and her cat wouldn't give her the time of day for two days!!!!

My husband's cat peed and pooped in the basement several times while we were on vacation. (Yes, my mom fed and played with her daily).

Next time have a heart-to-heart with your cat beforehand and give her extra attention when you get home. Be sure to bring her a present or souvenir.

  2. This one is easy, pure and simple separation stress. Just like dogs, or birds, or any other social animal if their separated from their companion they become very, very, sometimes seriously scary stressed out till they meet up with them again. Dogs are very bad, but cats can be too because cats are just *** social as dogs believe it or not. Your cat is prolly very attached to YOU and not the rest of the family so when you leave all she does is wait for you to come back. She doesn't eat, or sleep (just guess) and doesn't want anything to do with anyone until you get back.

A trick you can do to lower this is buy a calming aid at the store for your family to plug into the wall while your gone, also, make your leaving less noticeable. No big “Good bye kitty kitty! I love you!” and then walk out the door. Just kinda leave, maybe even have the cat in another room while it’s sleeping so it takes her longer to notice you’ve gone.

  3. aww kitty misses you.  her routine is disrupted when you're not there and it bothers her.  she doesn't feel as comfortable with the rest as with you.  she may get more used to it.
