Question:

Why does my cat smell like urine?

My long haired cat smells of urine. I washed her, especially around her "area," thinking that the fur was just dirty, but she still smells. I don't think that she has a urinary track infection because she does not pee outside of her litter box, nor does she urinate frequently. She licks her butt a lot, but don't think it's worms because she's an indoor cat and my short-haired cat doesn't l**k hers. Does she just need a shave? Or could there be something else wrong?

  1. if its a female the males leave there mark if u no what i mean =\

  2. Hi there, she could very well have blocked glands around her "special area", if the smell persists check with the vet. (If they are blocked, clearing them is easy and not expensive)

  3. Cause it is a cat. They are always spreading their scent cause that is what they do. Apparently the long hair gets in the way.

  4. Take your cat to the vet. It is possible for a cat to have a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) and not have litterbox issues right away. The l*****g her butt is a clue that there is something going on. Cats usually clean excessively if there is a problem. Your vet will want to run a urinalysis.

Urine smells can be retained in the long hair even with washing. You can have the vet shave the area so that the urine doesn't get on the fur. It will keep her cleaner, and help with the odor. But you must address the issue with your vet.

  5. cuz im too broke to affford a toilet so i used ya kitty

  6. cats have scent , she me be going into heat and sending out that send for the fellas

  7. She may have strong urine smells and changing the kitty box helps some/most the time.

  8. spray fa breeze anti bacterial spray on her.

  9. I'd take her to the vet and get her checked coz it sounds like some kind of infection to me.

One of my cats had an infection and she would dribble bits of pee without knowing, which on a long haired cat would stay on her fur. If she does have an infection it can't be feeling very nice for her and eventually will be painful and uncomfortable and she will start peeing everywhere coz she won't be able to help it and sometimes you won't notice it until the infection has got quite bad. Take her to the vet. Female cats shouldn't smell like urine unless there is something wrong.

Male cats on the other hand if they aren't desexed can smell like urine because they are continually marking their scent on their territory and they have a very strong odour. Desexed males shouldn't smell either
