Question:

Why does my cat try to "bury" his food?

Whenever they are done eating my kittens make that burying motion with their paws on the floor around the food bowl. I have two, so maybe they are trying to "hide" the food from the other one and keep it to themselves, as they would in the wild? They are 10 weeks old. I don't think its because the food is old and smelly, they do it after they eat.

  1. There are many theories on this actually:-

    1) Your cat is not hungry and would like to save the food for later

    2) Your cat find the food to his dislike

    3) Your cat wants to bury the food that he likes and wants to come back and enjoy it later

    4) Your cat is trying to hide his scent after a meal, afraid that it might lead a predator to his location

It's hard to know for sure what the actual reason is but cats have many quirky behaviors that we can't really understand anyway.

  2. Maybe the cat thinks that it is really bad food and it tries to hide the food bowl from you so that you couldn't re-fill it but that would be a bad thing as then it would go hungry so don't listen to my advice!!!

  3. Its a natural response to hide the leftovers (even if there are none) to keep predators away from their "turf". My one cat did it a lot when he was younger and still does so on occasion, he's now 5 years old.
