  1. These are often called side stitches (cramps). They occur on the sides of your chest, right?

If this is the problem, there could be several different causes. First, and most common, is breathing. You should always run with an exact breathing pattern each and every time you run. Just like you should maintain a regular sleep pattern, you should maintain a breathing pattern, maybe its two breaths in, one breath out, maybe reverse, maybe completely different. This part is up to you-but STAY CONSISTANT. When breathing becomes off-stride and different for the body, it is trying to compensate, and for some reason it begins to hurt. Just maintain good breathing.

Also, it could be eating or drinking before running. You should not eat or drink (even water) more than 1 hour before a long run. Your body just needs time to digest.

These could be the problems. When like this, take a deep breath, and try to get breathing back on pace. If failing, take a break, deep breaths, and start running again. But you can also use this as a training tool; would you stop in a cross country race because your side hurt? I don't think so!

  4. Have you recently increased speed or distance?

If you've increased speed, your lungs might be having a hard time keeping up.
