  1. you may be embarassing her. I think it would be a good idea to tell her exactly what she did. For example "You did a really good job helping me with blank" be very specific with your praises.

  2. substitute your pretty smart and wonderful and I love you so much

    hope this helps

  3. TRY NOT SAYING ANYTHING  ABOUT THE GOOD STUFF FOR AWHILE THEN SEE HOW SHE TAKES IT,,,

  4. My daughter does this sometimes. She mostly does it if she isn't proud of what she did, herself. Just last night she painted a candy land picture. It actually looked really great to me. I told her so. I said, "Wow, I'm impressed with that picture. Those lollipops look fantastic." She started to cry. She screamed that that was the worse part of her picture and then she tore it up. I usually tell her that was a little extreme and now look, she has no picture.

My husband thinks the best way to handle it is to ask her," What do you think of that? Then just agree.

I actually don't want to do that, though. I want to compliment and hope that she'll appreciate it. It is probably just an age thing. My daughter is 6. How old is yours?

ETA:Willow you are so wrong. My daughter does that and in our home we are pro-self esteem. Some kids just have that perfectionist personality. I know my child hasn't been in trouble or punished or put down EVER . She has never had to have more than a time out. So... your advice is terrible. Sorry. I hope the original poster does not get offended by your response.

  5. I would guess that you've left her with a lot of experience in doing something wrong.  Now, she's done so many wrong things, she can't differentiate between praise and punishment.

That or, she has a mental issue and you should see a doctor.
