Why does my cockatiel keep flying to the top of my door?

It does that pretty much everyday.

When I take it out, it flies to the door. When it wants to leave my room it flies to the door.

WHY is that?

  1. Birds like to be up high.  My birds liked to sit up on the top of my bedroom door.   I realized it was not a good idea and hung a bar from the ceiling for them to perch on instead.

Door sitting results in p**p spots on inside and outside of doors.

A screen door opened to wide might give the bird on the door a chance to escape.  Clipping wings would probably prevent them from being able to get on the door top and then sitting on the door would no longer be an issue.

Sitting on the top of door can be dangerous if someone closes the door and catches the birds foot.

If a bird sits on the front door and someone opens a back door that automatic suction through the house can slam the door with the bird closed without any chance for the bird to move resulting in injury or death to bird.

  2. Birds like to be high and away from predators. Have you ever had his wings clipped? I always advise having a pet bird that comes out of it's cage to have wings clipped to avoid the bird flying into windows and other things that can cause injury or death, such as ceiling fans, toilets (drowning ) other animals in the house grabbing the bird, chemicals etc.... Also a lot of household plants etc... are toxic to birds.

  3. cockatiels are a very dominant bird. this mean he accepts you as a member he is taking his turn to "look out for predators" mine does this all the time too. idk if he does that because he wants out of your room though. do you have a place outside of your room that is higher than your door? if so that is why.

  4. I think its a security thing. Birds are used to being in high places, keeps them out of danger.

I had a freind whose bird would sit on top of her cabinets.
