I have a young cockatiel .... I've had him for 7 weeks now and although he still won't get on my hand he will sit next to me, I've taught him to wink ... and he likes water spray baths .... but he doesn't make and noises. Previous experience has taught me that they chatter nearly all the time and to anything ... but he does NOTHING ..... I thought I had a 'duff' one but when I first got him he squarked loudly when he flew (h's stopped this now as he isn't scared). I even began to wonder if he does it while im out!!!!!

  1. PUT A MIRROR IN THE CAGE WITH HIM.

  2. Maybe the bird is content. My Cockatiel did not make much noise and she was the sweetest little bird. Unlike the small parrots they are not real noisy. Thank your lucky stars for I have some loud Quakers. Now the little lovebird makes a little sound, I think he is telling them to be quiet. Is he friendly? Start talking to her. Is she a good, friendly pet?

  3. he may be to young or he may be a she

  4. I have a cockatiel too.I've had him for 3 months but he is very noisy .Maybe your parrot is female because female parrots aren't so noisy or your cockatiel has a problem and needs a doctor.

  5. It seems to me you have a female!!

Have a look under it's wings,in a Grey you will see prominent Yellow spots this denotes a female (But only if it has moulted)as these appear on both male and female till they moult.also a bar like marking on their tales.

A male will not have these or will loose them in moult.

A Lutino or white will have the same yellow markings but tend to be a bit more difficult to see.

Give your bird time to settle down some take longer than others so be patient and don't condemn it yet.

    Noise means nothing yet.

  6. Sounds like you have a female as the tend to be much less vocal than males.   How old is your tiel?  If  she/he is over 8 months old you can visually s*x her/him fairly acuratly.  Look under the tail feathers females have a structural barring that males don't have.   Keep in mind this will only work for birds that have gone through their first adult molt (generally 6-8 months) as both genders have the baring prior to that.

  7. Maybe you have a female there not near as victorious.

  8. i'd say your lucky to have a quiet one rather than have it sqwaking its head off while your trying to watch telly

maybe its a female they tend to be less vocal
