Question:

Why does my computer think its DVD drive is a CD drive?

I have a DVD +R drive that I have hardly used, so I am quite unfamiliar with it. I want to copy some files from my hard drive to a DVD.

Windows Explorer showed the drive as being a DVD drive. I put a blank DVD +R disc into the drive and the disc spun and the in-use light went on and off. A window with the title "CD Drive (D:)" popped up with the question, "What do you want Windows to do?"

There were three options to burn a CD using RealPlayer, iTunes, or Windows Media Player. One option was "Open writable CD folder using Windows Explorer." The last option was "Take no action."

I selected "Open writable CD folder..." and a window with the title "CD Drive (D:)" opened. I drag-and-dropped the folder I wanted to copy to this window. In a moment, a window with the message, "Windows encounterd a problem when trying to copy this folder. What do you want Windows to do?"

The options were Retry, Skip, Cancel. I retried and the same thing happened. Then I cancelled. The folder that I was trying to copy was much larger than the capacity of a CD but would fit on a DVD with room to spare.

I don't even know where to begin to solve this problem. I'm not very familiar with buring CDs and DVDs, although I am otherwise a very experienced computer user.

Thanks for any advice you can give!!

  1. you can use cd drive for copy data in blank cd.

  2. I would suggest you get a burning software such as Nero and do not depend on windows to help you burn your dvd. When the window of "what do you want windows to do" pops up, just click cancel and use your burning software to burn your dvds.

And if you still face problems when burning your dvd when u use the burning software, you may have to check the file names of the files you are burning as some burning softwares may not be able to burn files with foreign languages(non alphabet based) in them (eg. chinese, korean, japanese). If this happens, I suggest changing the names all to alphabets.
