Question:

Why does my connection randomly stop working?

Every once in a while I have trouble with my internet connection. I don't actually lose it. It still registers as connected, but it will be very slow or I won't be able to use AIM or access websites. Occasionally, if i turn off the firewall, it'll work, but that doesn't always work and I know that isn't really the best idea. I've tried to find out if it's connected with anything, like if certain programs have anything to do with the problem, but i haven't found anything. I have a linksys router connected to my computer. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. If you have any ideas about what the problem might be and how I can fix it, I really appreciate it.

  1. A couple things you can try..

It might be a spyware issue:

Google "superantispyware" download and scan your computer

Google "kaspersky"  and download the free 30-day trial and scan your computer.

To check your internet connection hardware e.x. yout connection between your computer, router and modem, do the following..

goto Start -> Run -> type in "cmd" and then click "ok"

this will bring up a black windows.

type in the following without quotes

    "ping -n 10000 www.google.com"

now keep that windows running in the background.. if you check back periodically it will tell you if your connection is dropping out on you..

you will see the message "connection timed out" during the ping process if your connection is dropping.
