  1. A cordless phone uses electricity from your home to make the telephone itself function.  A telephone with a cord on it, uses power from the telephone company to make your phone work.  If the power is out for an extended amount of time like 24-48 hours, the telephone company phone will die also.  The telephone companies have back up generators and batteries to keep telephones working after the power goes off.  But over long amounts of time the fuel for the generator is used up and the batteries will stop due to too much draining and no recharging.
