I go and get him groomed at the local pet store. But like 1 hour after we get home he starts smelling again.

He is a Great Dane, and he goes outside to potty. Do either of those have anything to do with it?

  1. Poor quality food can have a major effect on the smell of a dog. What brand food are you feeding him?

  2. I would go to the vet and get him checked out he could have a skin disorder and they have meds for that. Best Wishes!

  3. ~ Are you feeding your dog a quality dog food.  Food will make a big difference in how oily your dog is.  More oil, means more bad dog smell.  I have 2 Danes and they get a bath every month to couple of months and they do not stink.  I use quality food and they are inside dogs.  I agree that an ear infection will also create a smelly dog around the face.  I would look into the dog food and your dogs ears and see what you find.

  4. Dogs are not people...........there whole being is different.

Dogs just smell like dogs.  It's in their skin, poors, fur, nature.

We can't make them something they are not.  We have human body odor, dogs have their animal body odor.  It could be the "brand and/or quality" of food you are feeding him, also.

Now, if you think something is very wrong.....then you may consider taking him to your Vet to be checked for any ill situations such as ear problems, teeth/gum problems, etc.

  5. Have you ever had his Anal Gland cleaned? If you haven't, that may sound odd, but it is an extremely common thing for dogs. I work in a vet clinic and sometimes dogs have to come in as often as once a month to get it cleaned. Not all dogs have this problem, but it is very common. It isn't neccesarily a huge health issue, but it keeps them from smelling a little "skunky." I highly recommend calling your vet and your problem should be solved! =)

  6. If he is being bathed too often, he will start to smell as it destroys the oils in their coat. Peeing outside isn't going to cause him to smell, unless he is peeing on himself.

Might be the dog food you are feeding.

  7. Having owned a great dane I know that is one heck of a lot of dog so maybe he is just bigger so when he goes out and plays and rolls in stuff you can smell him a whole bunch more. :-)

Check his ears to make sure he does not have an infection.

You can also buy spray on stuff at the pet store for dogs to make them smell better, that may help.

    Good luck!

  8. my dog began smelling because of an infection in his ears (Goldens are prone to that). We had to actually take a sniff of his fur until we found out why he was so stinky. We had to modify his diet and give him antibiotics. In any case, I would bet whatever it is will require a modificiation of his diet.

There are online sites that will tell you how to do this if you don't have access to a vet like we did. There are online vet supply places that provide antibiotics from what I've seen online.

  9. Have you  looked in his ears?  If a dog has an ear infection that will make a dog smell badly.
