He is about 6 years old and I have had him since he was a baby. I feed him a proper diet for his species which includes lots of fruit, beans, eggs (with broken egg shell), greens, occasional macadamia nuts, and cod liver oil for extra vitamin A. NO SEED.

He is a caged bird and I try to provide different surfaces for him to trim his beak, i.e., grit paper, cement perches, grit paper, cottle bone, etc. I also try to trim the beak myself, but it is difficult and he doesnt like it.

Is there something I can add to his diet to stop his beak from growing too fast?

  1. Have you tride a mineral block? You can buy those at pet stores. If that doesn't work than im not sure anything will. You can also go contact a vet and check whats up.

  2. My Amazon is the same way. I have to file it but be very careful not to go too deep.

  3. His beak could be overgrowing because of a previous trauma. Another reason is that when a bird inflicts damage to it own beak ot to anothers irregular growth can happen. Grit paper, cement perches, and any other rough surfaces can increase the chances of irregular growth because they'll rub their beaks against those rough surfaces, thus inflicting damage to the beak. Word of the wise, those surfaces are not good for the bird's beak or feet because it can damage both appendages and increases the chances of the bird getting an infection if they defecate on the perches as well. Take your bird to the vet if all else fails.

  4. I have owned and bred many Eclectus and have not had this problem. Mine did have a good mixture of seed though as well as the other food you mentioned. Are you sure the beak is overgrone? Compare the length of the beak with other Eclectus, you can search Google Images to check. Eclectus beaks have a slightly longer top than most other parrots. If you are sure it is overgrown take your bird to the vet and have it trimmed. Is it the top or bottom part of the beak?

  5. add some good quality parrot pellets to his diet. He could also be hyper-vitamined hence he's growing too fast, what are his nails and feathers like?
