down by its private area and up by its shoulder blades? I bathe him in super pet squeaky clean shampoo once a week. I didn't bathe him as soon as he got dirt all over him from the park. Could that be why too? Could it be just his breed? He hasn't had any of his shots except the one he got from Marshall Pet Farm before he left there. I am going to get his shots though. I believe he is a cinnamon Sprite. That's his breed I think. He's been scratching but not everyday and has been sneezing before this even happend but its not everyday either.

  1. its probably infected with something or it could be swollen

  2. It sounds like a skin irritation and or balding. Balding in a ferret is serious.  It can be caused by over washing, allergies or even Adrenal disease.

Ferrets commonly undergo a seasonal alopecia (hair loss due to shedding) in which the hair re-grows at the end of the season. In ferrets with adrenal disease, however, the alopecia is secondary to elevated concentrations of circulating hormones (estradiol and other androgens) that suppress the anagen hair phase. Therefore, only follicles in the telogen phase remain.  In ferrets with adrenal disease, however, the alopecia is secondary to elevated concentrations of circulating hormones (estradiol and other androgens) that suppress the anagen hair phase. Basically, the elevated hormones caused by the disease make your ferret  very itchy and the skin turns pink and then dark red around their necks and in their private areas. They itch so much the hair thins and falls out while the skin gets very red. The over stimulation of hormones  makes the skin very dry and thin.  The ferret will also feel much warmer than usual.  Ferrets usually start to shed in early spring and sometimes in fall but will regrow a new coat with healthy looking skin.  The hormones are supposed to coincide with breeding season which is in spring, when the days are longer, but when we spay and neuter them at such an early age, we mess with this normal body function.

Poor nutrition and too much light can also make your ferret very itchy and uncomfortable.  It sounds like your ferret needs a visit to a ferret knowledgeable vet for a blood screen and a thorough check up.
