Question:

Why does my guinea pig never want to be picked up?

My guinea pig does love being held and things, but when I go up to its cage i can hear them squeeking to come out for a little cuddle so when I go to get pebble out he jumps over my hand.

But he does like coming out though. Please help if you know anythiing :)

  1. he just feels uncomfortable with you picking him up not a problem


  2. Guinea pigs never really like to be picked up. They're prey animals and used to being close to the ground, so picking them up is combining two of their worst fears - they're afraid that you'll eat them and afraid that you'll drop them!

    Some guinea pigs will get used to it with time and frequent handling, but lots still run away when you try to pick them up. One of mine still does everything he can to avoid "capture" even though I've had him for almost a year. Just don't take it personally - it sounds like your guinea pig is pretty well socialized.

  3. i have a female that if i move to fast on getting a hold of her she will try to run. you might try just being really casual about picking him up..
