Question:

Why does my hamster clean and scratch and bite herself? ?

She has been to the vet and hasn't got mites but was treated for any parasites with spot-on treatment twice. She has some dark spots and fur missing on her back where she scrapes on her cage, and grooms obsessively. It's as though she's self-harming, but has so much to do, large cage, tubes, toys, food etc... It's really odd. She is happy and healthy otherwise, but if she's not being held or given constant attention, she's doing this!

Any help or advice appreciated.

Oh, and I have another hamster who has the same bedding and food and shows no signs of this.

  1. She's gone mad.

  2. It could be an attention thing or she has OCD.

Try buying her some new toys and stuff to keep her distracted from doing this.

  3. she may have a skin complaint

    check again for mites etc

  4. might have those insects on her you know like fleas on dogs.
