Why does my hamster do this?

Every now and then when I want to feed her by hand, She shoves all of it in her mouth (i know they always do that) but then when I put her back in her cage she goes to her little spot and spits it all out.

Why does she do this? Does she save it for later or is she trying to use it for her little sleeping place thing.

Also; She pulls all her stuffing stuff out from under the bars and into her corner too.

And she usually puts seeds down there and pulls it up after I stop looking at her.

  1. hamsters are very protective about their food.  hamsters eat all the food they can and store it in their cheek pouches, and then when they get back into their territory they spit it out and save it for later, just like dogs with bones.  my hamster stuffs her face full i think she will explode one day!! LOL

my friend had a hamster and she never held it, and one time it was eating and i wanted to get it out, so i reached for it and it make these squeaking noises and attacked my hand, and bit me about 4 times!! CRAZYNESS

  2. shes saves it to eat for later. I have 2 hamsters and they do the same exact thing.  i know its a little wierd cause you think why don't just use the food dish. Its not to sleep on , my hamster use there studding stuff to try to make a little burrow to stay warm.

  3. The re-depositing of seeds is nothing to worry about; hamsters have pouches in their cheeks to carry food, and once they've found a place to store their treats, they put them in one area, usually in or around where she sleeps. It doesn't mean she's starving or anything, she's just hording away food, just in case. Its a natural instinct (like squirrels hide nuts in trees, etc.)

The moving around bedding is also normal; she is simply 'decorating' her home. She will usually move the bedding to the corner or area that she sleeps most in, and even if this isn't the case, its normal; hamsters like to burrow, so just think of it as her way of having fun.

    Hope this helps ;P

  4. I remember the first time my hamster did this, I though he was sick and took him to the vet and they explained me that they do that to "store it for later" the hamster is a lovely animal but its not an animal that will eat in your hand, as they are of the same family of rats, mouses, all kind of theese animals take their food to their nest and eat it there, thats why. I hope you understand now and take care of your hamster :D

  5. she is hoarding it so no other animals get it and so they have a stash for if something happens. they usually just snack on it though because you give him food regularly and she doesn't have anything that will take it. the bedding thing is completely normal. she is just making a nest or hiding hte food. that is normal hamster behavior.

  6. Yes its perfectly normal. They store food where they sleep so when they get uoo in the middle of the night they can just get the food there because hamsters can be lazy sometimes. lol.
