Why does my hand hurt where i hold the pencil (in between my thumb and index)?

This pain that you are noticing could be as a result of holding the pencil too tight (an example only, but I have had it happen to me before).

Yes, you can try to ice it down to see if that helps the swelling but I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation first to see what they think could be going on.
