  1. Could be an irritation from dust or flies.

Could be a pollen allergy - just because a horse does not have an allergy one year does not mean he cannot develop one the next.

Could be infection - especially if there is a lot of thick gunk coming out.

As with normal eyes you should warm some plain water, have a plentiful supply of cotton wool and for each dab use a fresh piece of cotton wool, so dab or wipe the eye, new cotton ball, dab or wipe, new cotton ball ......  This is to prevent cross infection.

If symptoms do not clear then you should consult your vet.  Eyes are very delicate and can be easily damaged if left unhealthy for too long, and they are darned uncomfortable!

  2. there could be things he is allergic to

or i had a horse that there tear dunks needed flushed

u can talk to ur vet about that.

  3. because of the time of year i would say it is probs from the flys, they get into horses eyes and cause them to run. i would buy your horse a fly screen and some fly repellant, this should stop the flys from bothering your horse. dont spray the repellant onto your horses face, spray some onto your hand and wipe it over your horses face, with this on and the screen your horses eye should clear up in no time. good luck

  4. fly irritation would be my guess especially if they are in both eyes

  5. I'm afraid its that time of year.

There is harvesting going on so there will be airborne particles of dust that will irritate the eyes.

    Also the flieds dont help.

Put a fly mask on  that covers the face and ears and most of the muzzle.  I find this helps.

  6. could be all the flies that are about.

one of my horses is like it too, we are just cleaning them.

  7. Hay Fever

  8. Hay fever?

  9. Flies. DON'T use baby wipes as they contain oil and will make his eyes worse. Sponge his face and apply oil of citronella. Have you checked to see if anything is in his eyes, dust from hay or seeds etc....You may even consider a fly hood. If it continues after this, consult your vet.

  10. Well its summertime, so all of their allergies start acting up. Just about every horse at my stable has runny eyes right now. If theyre really bad, but a flymask on him when he goes out in the pasture.

  11. He is probably being irritated by flies.

Wipe around his eyes with baby wipes and apply a fly repellant using a sponge on his face

You could also get a fly fringe but this may irritate the horse even more... my horse hates them!

  12. perhaps his contact lenses making eyes sore

  13. He could have allergies, excessive flies, or even something in his eye.  Call your vet and ask her about it.  She may be able to put your mind at ease and have something you can do to help.  We had to get an ointment for one of our horses for his runny eyes.  he had something like a sty or pink eye.  No big deal, but the ointment really helped clear it up.

  14. Lots of things can irritate a horse's sensitive eyes this time of year. Flies and dust seem to be the main culprits, but did you know that the sun can irritate a horse's eye also? Talk to your vet or trainer about flushing it with saline, and buy a fly mask to protect him from the sun.
