Question:

Why does my house have all these flies all of a sudden?

Out of nowhere, my house started getting a lot of big flies in my house. My parents would catch like 7, then the next day there are like 9 to replace them. Then they catch another 8 and there are like 7 more. We're pretty sure that there isn't a hole in our house where bugs are coming in, and we haven't found a bunch of hatched maggots or anything. The flies are big and slower than regular flies. They're less reactive to movement. Some kept landing on my leg even as I was walking, and other didn't budge when I waved a hand over them, while most flies scatter like mad.

Why did all these flies start coming up and where did they come from, and what can I do to prevent them from coming into the house?

Or what are some ways to catch flies without bug spray or squashing them?

  1. fly paper works the best. they may be hatching in a vent or somewhere damp. if you have animals the maybe nesting in the litter- this happened when my step son hadn't cleaned his ferrets cage for like a 2 weeks.

  2. The cause.

    1. Flies emerge at one time because their eggs were all laid at once on a good food source.

    2. This is just the season for the flies.  If they are less reactive to disturbance it may be they are not traditional flies but flower or other plant feeders. So they are in the neighborhood looking for food and they follow you into the house.

    The solutions:

1.Check around your house for a dead mouse or other small animal where eggs may have been laid.  It could be in a wall or outdoors so be alert for the smell.  There also may be other outdoor attractants such as garbage or smelly garbage cans.  It is easiest to get rid of the flies by eliminating the attractant.

    2.  Spend some time outside to see if they are a natural occurrence in your area.  You can not stop flies that are attracted to the neighborhood, if they are you will need to stop them from entering the house.

    3.  Flies are attracted to the odors humans  give off.  So they are always around us and therefore follow us indoors when we go in and out.  The also like the smells than come out of our houses so they hang around our doors waiting for us to come in or out. Change the odor present at doorways with a persistent spray.  Some insect repellents do it by smelling bad.  Use these on doorways that you use the most.

  3. Clean your house or throw out your trash.
