Question:

Why does my internet go out when I use the home phone?

It never used to do this until recently. Sometimes it goes out randomly even when I'm not using the phone. But I have noticed that every time I answer the phone or call someone with it, the internet goes out until 5-10 seconds after I hang up.

  1. I'm not sure, but if you have dial-up, then every time you pick up the phone, then your internet will go out.

  2. dsl operates over the phone network, using a different set of frequencies from phone calls.  If the frequencies are not properly separated this can cause problems.  Since this is a recent problem it is likely due to one of two causes:

    1. The signal filter has broken down.

    2. The signal filter has been inadvertently removed.

The filter is usually a little white plastic box that plugs in to the phone jack.  It would have one port for your phone and one for your dsl connection.
