Why does my internet suddenly work after I unpug and replug the coaxial into the splitter?

I have a cable modem (with attendant router) attached through a brand new splitter and coaxial. My internet keeps flickering on and off every few minutes. The only thing that helps is when I unplug and replug the coaxial into the splitter. What might this be, and how can I fix it?

Might have a bad splitter or a bad cable.  Also call you ISP (internet service provider) and tell them you are having issues with your internet connection.  It could be something outside that needs to be fixed.

A splitter can have crosstalk, which means that the two sides of the output are not sufficiently isolated from each other. What you need is a direct coax connection, and a high-isolation switch with two or more outputs. That should stop the crosstalk and help your modem connections. Electronics stores like Radio Shack and Circuit City have the switches.

In my experience, buying fresh cables have fixed that problem.  Although, if that doesn't resolve the problem, try to go to start/control panel/network connections/. Then,look for the adapter you use as primary(mine is the ethernet, not the 1392, because that's your dial-up modem).  Right click on the adapter, and choose to repair, or disable, then re-enable the connection.  I ended up having to move my modem far away from the tower, as well as any electronic device which could cause interference(within reason), whilst keeping the main cable as short as possible.  Good Luck. It may continue to bog down at times, therefore, you will need to repeat the process as described above.

If the splitter is a cheap one you got from the drugstore or Radio Shack, it's the problem.  Your cable company will give you a splitter and cables that are rated for modern digital TV.  Your Internet connection is just another digital TV channel on the cable.

The cable company adjusts the signal based on the load of all of the TVs and cable modems in the house.  I'll bet they need to make the signal a little hotter to accommodate the splitter.

The signal level is low and when you disconnect the wire,  it it sends the information back to the cable system for reauthorization which is successful and you get reconnected.  

Two things to do. Try changing ports on the slitter, TV to the one the Modem is in and Modem to the cable one. Make sure ALL the connections are tight.  Take each one out and with a pencil eraser clean the copper end of the wire and put in back in.

You can also take the slitter out and plug the modem directly into the cable wire.  If that works (and the above did not) you have a bad splitter, try an new one.  

If you continue to have problems the only thing you can do is call the cable company and ask them what you can do to get additional signal.
