Question:

Why does my kitten have soft stool?

I just took a stool sample to the vet. It turned up negative for any worms or parasites. It's not diarrhea but it's soft. She has firm stools sometimes too. Do you think she could be eating too much? Do you think I should cut out the wet food? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. Sometimes it is a clue that the kitten is a bit under the weather.  Kittens often go through lots of bouts with this and that, and if she has had a distemper vaccination booster, protection is there.

If her stools start to get runny, that needs a vet consulation as kittens can rapidly become dehydrated.

There is nothing wrong with only a wet food diet.  The main drawback is that you cannot leave it out for more than a hour or so, while dry food can be left out all the time.

However, try and stay within a narrow range of foods, because if you make too many changes too fast, it can cause digestive problems.  For instance, going from turkey to liver to tuna to beef to chicken in sequence can cause a problem.  Best to stick with one or two varieties they like, rather than change everyday.

  2. The wet food is what is causing the soft stool. The more "wet" food you give her the more soft the stool becomes. If your kitten eats too much "wet" food it can give the kitten the diarrhea.  Use the "wet" food sparingly such as a small pouch/can per day or, better yet, every other day. Supply her with plenty of dry kitten chow instead.

  3. do you let your cat outside? sometimes when their stomachs hurt, like dogs, they eat grass. this will make them either throw it up or have the soft stool, because its cleaning out their stomachs. dont worry, its normal. if your cats not an outside one, try a different food. some of the soft wet foods i give my animals would make them that way too, but they loved it! lol but dont worry its nothing bad

  4.   If you took a sample to the vet and the vet did not remark that the stool was too soft i think all is well.

A piece of advice do not give your kitten milk, it got the milk it needed from its' mother . Make sure you wash both water and food dish everyday, so that the kitten has fresh water to drink. Milk can work as a laxative to kittens, giving them runny stools.

When in doubt a simple call to your vet will set your mind at ease about most questions
