Question:

Why does my kitten hiss at me?

I have a 10 week old female kitten. She is very well behaved, and never stops purring, but lately she has hissed at me when I approach her. This is usually followed by loud purring and rubbing.

She came from a very good home. She also 'milk threads' my stomach a lot before settling.

  1. She just may not recognize you at first.

    hence the purring and rubbing.

Don't worry about it she will grow out of it.

Try saying her name when walking up to her and it may stop... if so then she is just not recognizing you.

  2. hissing is a defese response, to ward off predators.

however, at her young age it could be her attempt to mew.

my cat cant mew, he sounds mor like hes hissing, or squeking,

the pawing thing is a sign of the cat feeling content and safe, it regresses to feeling so safe as a kitten,so thats a good sign!!!hurts though when they nails grow!

  3. Cats and kittens purrs when they are frightened or ill as well, to calm themselves down as it reminds them of their mothers. How long have you had her for? May be shes is very timid and still not used to being around different people yet?
