Question:

Why does my kitten smell?

After a couple of weeks under my care, my kitten's poo smells very badly. When I hold her, she has gas. The animal shelter dewormed her, so I don't think that she has parasites. She eats high-quality wet and dry food.

  1. Soft food tends to cause gas and diarrhea in any animal. I would stick with just the dry food formulated for kittens, it is also better for their teeth.

  2. Try a different food.  She could be having trouble digesting whatever she's eating now.  I would also take her to the vet.  She may have stomach or intestinal problems.  And don't feed her too much wet food.  It's bad for their teeth and gums.  Once a week is plenty.  I feed my cats tuna in water and unsalted every couple of weeks.

  3. wet food!!! doesn't matter how good a brand it is... our cats (kittens at the time)had the same problem, as soon as we took them off the wet food,,, bye bye kitty air biscuits!!

    Good luck

  4. Maybe her tummy doesn't agree with the foods you're giving her. Try something else, and if it doesn't go away, see a vet.

  5. maybe you need to take her back to a vet.

  6. Both of my cats as kittens had bad gas.  It was funny because Merlin always farted on my non animal lover roommate :)

I'm guessing that your kitten is getting used to it's new surroundings and new diet.  Both can be stressful on their tiny little stomach.

What food are you feeding her?  There are many opinions on what "high quality" means.  Iams, Science Diet, and Eukanuba are NOT in my opinion.

  7. If she is from a shelter then her stomach is still upset from the change in diet to a high quality food, it is common. My rescue kittens STANK for a few weeks until the old rubbish was out of their system. Take the kitten off the wet food for a while and let the fibre in the dry clean it out.

Maybe get some lower quality kitten food and start from there again, gradually change it over to the high quality food over 2 weeks. If its still smelly take it to the vet and make sure it does not have an inflammitory disease.

  8. The wet cat food is most likely the source of the smelly kitty.
