Question:

Why does my kitty suckle soft blankets/clothes?

It's weird, we got him a year ago when he was 2 months old and he's done it since we've had him. He suckles it like he's getting milk from his mom, doing the thing where they knead their paws and stuff. Sometimes he seems kind of obsessed with suckling, will do anything to get up to that soft blanky on your lap.

  1. he may miss his mom. but still cats shouldn't have that kind of behavior.  see i use to have a dog that would always suck his mom like he was getting milk. but his mom didn't like it,it hurt her and she felt uncomfortable about it. i say just keep your cat away from anything it can suckle on. he will most likely get used to it and your problem should be fixed. (:

  2. The cat was taken away from it's mother way too soon.   Some need more time with them than others.  It is really cute and sometimes destructive as well.

They also "doo-dah" which is pawing when they're happy which is what they do when suckling their mother to produce more milk.  Both are symptoms that they relate to you as their mother (which is a really good thing), but are normal in all aspects.  Just take every step to ensure that they aren't suckling on something that could be bad for them.  You can try to divert their attention by playthings, etc.  I usually have a string that they play with or have catnip around on the scratching post which will keep them diverted and not obsessing over it.

  3. its soft

  4. I think they do it because they may have been taken from their mother too early. Two of my cats did and 1 still does that. And if you're wearing buttons, they sometimes suck on those. It's perfectly normal, I think.

  5. This is normal behavior in many cats!  It is most likely scent related.  My cat does this when she's away from me.  My cat loves everything soft and with my scent on it!

  6. Poor baby misses his momma.

  7. My cat did that for a few years with my sister's soft toy (the toy is now bald) I believe it's just an instinct they have. It reminds them of their mothers. It wont hurt the cat as long as it doesn't swallow anything it shouldn't. Just make sure you have all soft valuables hidden away!
