it happens about 75% of the time. completely freezes, have to do "ctrl + alt + del" task manager process. and it pretty much only happens in a hotmail e-mail account when I click on any message, the message will open and then it freezes.

  1. Does it do this when you access the account or when you go into Hotmail via Internet Explorer (IE)?

If it is when you access the account have you done a spy-ware and virus check. Some Key-loggers and down-loaders register in the network and Hotmail will lock it out, but it should not crash the whole laptop.

It sounds more like you have a conflict in IE - are you using IE7? If so go to START > Accessories > System Tools and select Internet Explorer (no add-ons) then access Hotmail and see if it still does it. If it does not then one of your add ons is the problem. In IE7 go to Tools click on manage add ons and see what is there. Most of it is helpful but sometimes the hired help trip each other up. Do you have AVG or Norton Anti Virus? Their Toolbars seem to react badly when in conjunction with others like Yahoo and Google particularly on sites requiring a password entry, look in your Add and Remove programs (Programs and Features in Vista), remove all the toolbars and try again. If it doesn't happen (and you still have your AV toolbar) problem solved. If it does re-occur then disable each add-on one at a time and see where it behaves and you have your culprit. Delete the add - on that causes the problem.

  2. Maybe your computer needs more memory. Or maybe you have unwanted spyware, malware, etc. that gets activated whenever you enter hotmail. Try running a virus scan first. Also, if you are sending a very huge file, it is possible that the built-in virus check in hotmail has to take an extended time to do its work first.
