  1. I fully agree; wireless routers have inbuilt fiewwalls. Internet service providers use WEP/WPA security, thus it is not an open network. When you link your computer to a secure network, you have to type in the 'network  key' , and without that, you cannot link onto the network. It prevents fraudlent activity on people's bandwith.

  2. You might have specified an IP in your configuration that only falls under the schema of that router. You should check your internet connection settings and ensure that the computer is actually receiving the IP address from the router (or server) not from the computer itself.

  3. Usually because everyone else has enabled their WEP/WPA and firewall services to stop you nicking their bandwidth

  4. You should open Network Connections, double click on the Wireless Network Adapter and view the wireless networks around you.

If they are "unsecured" you should be able to attach to them and use them as a connection.

If they are "secured" then you will need an encryption key to be able to use it.

    I hope that helps.

  5. this depends...be more specific. You usually have to click on the little icon in the bottom right if you have vista, its 2 computers, and either will have a world when you are connected or a red X when you are not. When you are not connected or want to connect to a different network, you can right click on the little computer icon, and select "connect to a network". it wont automatically connect to a network that is around. Also, you gotta have the network key. Hope this helps! be a little more details with which operating system, and with what you have tried, etc. and maybe i could help more. add details!
