Question:

Why does my lawnmower die four steps in?

Its a self-propelled mower and is about two years old.

Starting, I can cut a couple of lines without problem. But then shortly after, I'll start it up again and it'll die after about four or five steps.

If I walk real slow, it'll stay alive but just barely... I also noticed that it'll "puff-out" a little bit of black smoke, which it didn't before.

any ideas?

  1. the engine isn't strong enough anymore to cut through the grass.  or your grass is too long lol

  2. In two years it is ready for a minor tuneup and not ready for complete disassembly and reconditioning. Try replacing the aircleaner and spark plug and changing the oil. If this does not make a DRAMATIC change the next step is cleaning the carb and fuel tank out. The most common problem with a lawn mower is the gas that is left in the fuel tank from season to season. Gas will only last about two months before it will be 'out of spec' and cause varnish and gum to build up in the carburator and fuel tanks. I use a good quality fuel stabilizer like the brand name Sta-bil in all the gas that the mowers use. That way I know the gas is always going to be ready and not second rate.

  3. More than likely your engine is ideling to low adjust the idle of your engine

  4. sounds like the carb. running too lean

  5. It's the air filter. Not getting enough air due to a clogged filter.

  6. It could be the air filter but most likely it is the carburetor.  When you put a load on the engine by getting it into the grass the governor opens the throttle and put more gas into the engine.  If it puts too much gas in the engine will lose power, smoke and stall.  Bottom line is the carburetor needs to be cleaned and rebuilt.  Try removing the air filter and try it.  If it helps change the filter, if not it most likely is the carburetor.

  7. The engine has probably become rather full of burnt carbon. It should be stripped and cleaned and correctly re-assembled using new gaskets etc. The exhaust system should also be cleaned at this time.
