Why does my motorcycle make a clicking noise when it moves forward?

I have a 2004 Buell Blast. The clicking noise seems to be coming from the rear left but I can't figure out exactly what is causing it. It's kind of loud and I'm afraid if I continue to drive the bike I will ruin it. Any idea what is causing it and what I can do about it?

  1. Does it do it only in gear?  Or does it do it in neutral, stopped.  If it happens only in motion, see if you can see the chain hitting something, as it turns.  Maybe you could walk behind it and spot the noise then?  Exhaust ticking?

  2. Your belt is too tight.  Get a belt deflection tool so that you can accurately measure the belt tension, or you're going to ruin the transmission.
