I have recently bought this computer. It has windows xp on it. The speakers didn't work at first and then i had to reinstall windows, now when i start up the computer it comes to a black screen and i have to choose from two "Windows XP professional" They both say the same thing but when i click on one it is different than the other one. Is that bad? and why would i have two things of windows xp? but now i try to work on my computer and my whole computer freezes. sometimes it's right away and sometimes it takes a while, any help?

  1. To see where these operating systems are on your hard drive, boot into one of the xp's.  Goto Start>Run>type 'msconfig'.

    go to the boot.ini tab.

Here you can see where the OS's are stored on the hard drive. You may also use the 'Check All Boot Paths' button to have windows check and see if the directory structure is in place for each OS listed.

It would not be a bad idea to reinstall windows at this point.  If both installs are on the C:\ partition, when you start the windows xp install CD, delete the c:\ partition and then recreate it to install XP to it.

You should do a full format (not the quick format option), to ensure we rewrite the drive to 0's.

If possible, get a good anti-virus installed before ever connecting to the internet, search around for one that suites your needs! If you need to connect to the internet to get your anti-virus software, just ensure it is the first thing you do after connecting.

Now download the drivers that you will need from the manufactures website and install.  If you list what PC you have and what components (Network card, graphics card, optical drives, etc.) you have in it, we can help you find drivers for them.
