Question:

Why does my new guinea pig keeps "purring"?

I have a male rabbit and a female guinea pig. last week i bought another female guinea to keep the first company, and i thought they hit it off. the past few days, though, the new one has been making "purring" or "chuffing" noises. i looked it up on a guinea pig sound website, and it's a cross between the mad guinea pig sound and the mating sound. they are BOTH female and she's too young for being "in heat", so it couldn't be the mating. i don't think it's the mad sound, either, because she'll just run around on the floor and make it without even being CLOSE to anyone. does anyone else's guinea pig makes noises like this for no reason?

  1. my guinea pig purrs to but i dont have 2 of them she purrs when i pet her  and shes very happy and relaxed =-D

  2. ;P

    Cute. Mine do that too.

I've worked out its a kind of way of saying tht they're comfortable, with their surroundings or whatever.

But I think in your case, with a newly introduced female, that it will probaly be just the older one showing her dominance. Its nothing bad, don't fret yourself, Its if they start fighting than you should rethink things.

It's no biggie though, Like I said, don't fret about it.

    Perfectly normal.

    :D

  3. guinea pigs make lot's of noises. Purring is something you should be gald to hear. It means they are happy. Just like when a cat purrs. It is nothing to worry about. And yes, every now and then I'll be in my living room, where their cage is, and all of a sudden momo (the mother piggy) will start to purr very very loud :] for no particualar reason. I tihnk its cute >.<

    best of luck

  4. Guinea pigs will make a lot of noises.  From what you are describing your girls are rumbling.  It sounds like they are working out their dominance.  When she purrs, does her butt wiggle a little?

Guinea pigs are very social creatures and they have a social structure - even if it is just two of them.  Basically they are figuring out each others personality/where each other stand - and rumbling is kind of like.. strutting.

  5. If she is chattering her teeth while doing this then she's mad. If not, she's is trying to become the dominant pig. If she is jumping into the air and shaking her head, then this is called popcorning. This is the sign of a very happy guinea pig, it means they are happy and content.

  6. Yea my guinea pig Pipin does that too

At first I thought she might be a boy but realised that she does it when shes angry or just about to go crazy and do popcorns everywhere (its when they jump in the air and do weird spaz things).

  7. They purr when they are happy

  8. they are happy!!

  9. yes!!! mine too!

sort of like a purr, and they vibrate too...

my guinea pig is old, but i think she does that to make sure i am there and everything is ok....

sort of like a little kid asking if everything is happy...

anyway, it makes sense to me. : )
